And.... Our Learning Journey continues

TERM 3
Our Science Fair was held on Tuesday 7th September.
We would like to thank all the students for their hard work, the judges and the support from family and friends that made this such a success!  And thank you to all the visitors who came and shared our learning with us.
Check out these pictures:

Cross Country 2010 - when the weather finally obliged, went really, really well.  We can all be very proud of the training, effort and commitment we put into cross country this year - And didn't TAPS do so well at the interschools!

TERM 2
Term 2 was jam-packed full of learning opportunities for The Te Awa Syndicate and we embraced them all with enthusiasm, including our trip to Lake Serpentine with the Te Kauri Trust Educators to learn about wetlands restoration and lots of other things; our visits to the Te Awamutu Museum to learn about Water Sustainability from a Maori perspective and the opportunity for some of us to participate in the Mangaohoi Stream Activity day and the Mangapiko Planting Day; the visit from Amy and Kathryn from D.o.C. who really increased our knowledge about wetlands and their inhabitants with their presentation and follow up activities.

All of these learning opportunities were a follow on from the Treasure Hunt along the banks of the Mangaohoi Stream that we did in term one as we continued along our Ecological Sustainability inquiry path.

We used a quote from Sir Peter Blake:
"Earth is a water planet by which the quality of water determines quality of life. Good water, good life; poor water, poor life; no water, no life."
to develop our Big Question for the term:
How can we find out about (dive in), monitor (wondering and discovering) and improve (take action) Earth's water quality to ensure good water = good life for now and in the future?

Term 2 Showcase and Speech Competition

A big high five to all Te Awa students who used the information they researched for their report writing on an ocean animal or an amphibian to prepare and present an informative speech this term.  Two students from each class were selected to participate in the speech finals at our showcase - Mrs Gibbs and Ms Findlay had a very difficult job as our speech judges.

At the showcase each class shared powerpoints that highlighted some of our inquiry learning this term such as; our Lake Serpentine Trip, our Te Awamutu Museum Trip, our visit from D.o.C., J Rock, J Sport, Jump Rope for Heart....

J Rock Rocked!
What an awesome day at Founders Theatre.
A huge thank you to the parent helpers who gave up their day to be with us.
We rehearsed on stage, had dance offs, got to give sing star a go, played twister and hula hoops, picked up "free stuff" from ASB and entered a guess the amount of money competition - which a TAPS student one!
Props, costumes, make up, hairspray, dry ice, awards, pizza, free magazines - A great day was had by all!

J SPORT
The students involved in J Sport also need a big pat on the back as the sporting event they planned and executed for other syndicates in the school to participate in was hugely successful!

Check out the selection of EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom) photos below.  There are some photos of our trip to Lake Serpentine to explore the wetlands, some are from our trip to the Te Awamutu Museum where we learned about Water from a historical Maori perspective and some are photos of the Te Awa students who were involved in the Mangapiko Planting Day at Montafiore Reserve recently.

Jump Rope for Heart and Jump Jam in Term 2 were both very successful with money raised to support the two charities!  Well done to all the students who participated in these events and got sponsership.

Te Awa Syndicate is making a Taniwha Mosaic to put up between Room 5 and 6
above the new deck and under the new roof.
We will be doing this during our lunchtimes - it is already looking fantastic!  A big thank you to all those who have donated tiles for us to use.

In Week 5 of term 1 we had a couple of Piston Basketball players come and visit us.  We had a hoop shooting competition and some of us won some free tickets to their first home game at the Te Awamutu Events Centre.

What a start to the year!
Our syndicate trip to the Te Awamutu Walk of Fame and our Treasure Hunt along the banks of the Mangaohoi Stream at the beginning of term 1 was a great success.  Many thanks to all the parent helpers who took time out of their day to enjoy this experience with us.
